Foot webbing: one phrase, two meanings

Now let's talk about foot webbing, because it's one of those phrases that creates confusion before you even get to price. In the textile world, 'foot webbing' usually means webbing sold by the foot—cut-to-length roll goods. It's how small shops buy material for custom backpack straps, pet collars, or repair jobs.

But I've also had customers use 'foot webbing' to mean webbing for feet, like sandal straps or orthopedic supports. Both are legitimate. The problem is not the phrase; it's assuming everyone means the same thing.

If you're buying webbing by the foot, ask three questions:

  • Is the price per foot, per yard, or per meter?
  • How are the ends finished? Heat-cut, cut-and-folded, or raw?
  • Is the width actual or nominal? A 1-inch strap that measures 0.9 inches won't fit side-release buckles.

If you're working with ultra-budget goods or true military-spec contracts, your numbers and requirements may be totally different. I've also spent the last four years working with domestic vendors, so I can't speak from experience on direct sourcing overseas.

I think the principle still holds. The material mix-up, the color mismatch, the hidden fee—they all come from the same place. Somebody assumed something that wasn't written down. The most frustrating part is that this happens over and over. You'd think written specs would prevent it. But in textile sourcing, words on a page are only as good as the verification behind them.

One caveat: my checklist won't catch every problem. It won't catch a supplier who swaps yarn after the test. But it catches the errors that come from assumption—and those are the ones I can control.
